SPTA was founded in the UK in 1993 to
promote interest in the craft skills, history, technology and shooting techniques
associated with traditional archery worldwide.
AIMS: to spread knowledge of this fascinating and limitless
subject, covering the composite Avar bow to Zen practice in Kyudo.
OUR MEMBERSHIP: includes craftspeople, scholars and historians, from
the UK, Germany, Canada, Spain, Ireland and the USA.
Above all our members love archery in all it's forms and are determined
to enjoy it, believing that there is a lot more to this subject than high
scores or mere arrowspeed. We also never stop learning!
COMPETITIONS we promote include field archery, roving marks,
speed shooting flight. popinjay and
wand, in fact any traditional archery pursuit which is traditional, and
legal! (Hunting with the bow is illegal in the UK).
We are the only Society in the UK currently dedicated to promoting the various
skills of competitive horsearchery

SPTA is currently the
only Society in the UK actively supporting a class for 'primitive' bows.
Traditional bows we encourage include English and American longbows,
wooden or composite recurves (the latter including fibreglass) and native
american styles.
We hold occasional weekend workshops
where simple whitewood flatbows are made under the guidance of Founder of
SPTA, Hilary Greenland, who is a professional bowmaker and fletcher.
SPTA President Hector Cole is the foremost arrowsmith in the UK, specialising
in replica arrowheads from history, as well as historic arms generally.
